Why did ESET Smart Security notify me that the usage period for Learning mode has elapsed and then block all communication? (4.0)

One of the Personal firewall modes in ESET Smart Security 4.0 is Learning mode, during which the Personal firewall allows all activity and automatically creates and saves rules based on user behavior. The Personal firewall should only be set to Learning mode temporarily, until all rules for required communication have been created, and then set to either Policy mode or Automatic mode with exceptions. Learning mode expires after 14 days and sets the Personal firewall to block all communication. When you see such a notification, we recommend that you switch to Automatic mode with exceptions or Policy mode. However, if you would like to modify the period during which Learning mode is active, follow the steps below:

Warning: Learning mode should only be used if you are an experienced user in a controlled environment, as it does not require user approval to create permanent rules and can expose your computer to increased risk. If you suspect that you may have malicious software on your machine or are on an unsecured network, we recommend you do not use Learning mode under any circumstances.

  1. Open the main program window by clicking the ESET icon  next to the system clock or by clicking Start → All Programs → ESET → ESET Smart Security.

  2. Press the F5 key on your keyboard to open the Advanced Setup window.

  3. Click Personal firewall → Learning mode in the Advanced Setup tree on the left.

  4. Set your preference in the Notify about learning mode expiration in field and click OK.

in the advanced setup window, the menu tree is on the left and the setup area is on the right; the field in which you enter your preferences is in the bottom-right corner of the setup window
