On-demand computer scan (3.0) is very slow in Windows Vista

If an On-demand scan takes longer than normal to complete under Microsoft Windows Vista, it may be due to incorrect permissions on the temporary file folder. If this is the case, the On-demand scan will show an error similar to this:

"C:HPBINAddDevicePath.exe » UPX v12_m5~_ext - decompression could not complete (possible reasons: insufficient free memory or disk space, or a problem with temp folders)"

To address this error, verify that you have permission to write to the C:WindowsTemp folder by following the steps below:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:Windows
  2. Right-click the Temp folder and select Properties.

  3. Click the Security tab and then click Edit (If you have UAC turned on, you will need to confirm this action by clicking Continue)

  4. Select the Users group from the Group or user names section.

  5. Verify that Write permission is allowed. If not, allow it. Click Apply and then click Yes.

  6. Click OK and then OK once more to save the changes. On-demand scans should now finish at their normal speed.
